The Paladin's Assistant follows the two of them case by case — a string of murders at a logging camp, then whatever comes next — through a country where the church's authority is heavy, the wilderness is hostile, and magic is considerably more dangerous than the monsters. Each book is a self-contained investigation. Across the series, Edmund grows up and John learns to live with what he's lost.
This is dark adventure fantasy that takes its mysteries seriously and its moral questions more so. Nobody here is purely good, the answers are rarely clean, and the world does not adjust itself for the convenience of the people trying to fix it.
